Vyn’Lendal was born looking quite normal. With blonde hair and shiny

Loth’Lorain who had settled in the city of OakStone after her banishment
from the caravan of her father for being with child out of wedlock.
Kilagra did the only thing she could to survive in this strange land. She
danced and worked for the money to support both herself and her infant
son. Kilagra worked hard dancing in the taverns of good folk in the
evenings and on street corners for coin in the daytime. Lendal grew up a
happy child with the love and support of his mother who longed for the
love of her life Lendal’s father to return and take them away. Kilagra
would tell stories of his father to Lendal, of how he came to her one day
while they were out traveling, of how this beautiful man named Vyn had
come to her and began courting and romancing her. And of how much
happiness Vyn had brought her in the short time they were together.
Shortly after Lendal’s 7th birthday his mother discovered
quite shockingly that Lendal had the ability to shapechange into different
animals, this discovery came about when she came home from dancing in the
streets one day to discover she had two identical cats laying by the
hearth. And when they looked up one of them began to change back into
Lendal himself. They talked about this ability and of the other abilities
Lendal had manifested recently the ability to talk to the animals around
town and the ability to be other people as well. She asked him to keep
this a secret for the time being as it may disturb the other town-folk, he
agreed and life continued this way for a while longer.
One night Kilagra had attracted the attentions of one of the city
guards named Bronk. Bronk accosted Kilagra later that night after her
performance, they began to fight as Kilagra wanted nothing from him but
Bronk wanted something from her and didn’t care if she wanted it or not.
During the fight Kilagra scratched Bronk along the left eye and cheek of
his face trying to get away from him, Bronk lost control of himself and
shook her so hard it snapped her neck before realizing what he had done.
Bronk was convicted of murder and hanged a few weeks later.
Lendal stayed with the good folk of the tavern Boars Nest as they had
been friend to both himself and his mother. But things were hard for them
and soon he left fearing he was a burden to them. Lendal took to the
streets of OakStone, helping himself to what he needed as life dictated.
Lendal became a very skilled little thief. Helping himself to what
ever was around that he needed, but never taking more than that. He didn’t
like to steal but needed to survive. His ability to shapeshift into other
animals and then into people helped him a great deal as did his ability to
talk to the animals around town. This continued until he was about 13
years old when he inadvertanly picked the pocket of a robed man traveling
through the city. Apparently the coin purse was tied to his belt in a way
that Lendal didn’t see in time to cut. Lendal was arrested and sentenced
to prison for his crimes.
On the way to the prison Lendal escaped by turning himself into a
ferret and slipped out of the bars and into the forest. Lendal knew he
could never go back to OakStone. But he had never been out into the forest
nor had he any knowledge of how to survive in the wild, so he began to
follow the road that leads, he hoped, to a new city and new possibilities.
Along the way Lendal was afraid that at anytime the guards would come
back for him and take him to prison so when ever he heard people or horses
on the road he would duck into the forest and hide till they past or until
he was able to discern that they were not guards. Lendal traveled like
this for a couple days eating the berries and nuts that the animals around
here said were safe to eat. They also told him of the streams and rivers
that were near the road as he came near them.
One day as he was walking down the road he heard horses coming up form
behind him fast. Lendal quickly darted into the forest near the road and
hide quietly waiting and watching for them to pass. What he say startled
him to no end for they were not men on horseback but in fact they were
half-horse men (centaurs). This both scared and intrigued him.
So Lendal turned himself into a hawk and followed them from on high.
Watching them to both see what they were as well as what they did all the
while thinking they might be like him. But then never changed into
anything else.
For days they traveled and soon they came to a village surrounded by
tall wooden battlements and as Lendal landed on the battlements he
discovered that the people of this village were all like the half-horse
men he had been following. Lendal watched these strange people live there
lives similar to the people if OakStone but with varying degrees of simple
amazement that allowed for one that was part horse to live like what he
believed was normal people. He didn’t notice one of the townsfolk
watching him.
Charas was the shaman of the centaur tribe he was a handsome and
muscular figure with chiseled features and a proud dark mane, and having
an affinity for animals from birth he new there was something wrong about
the hawk that landed on a battlement and watched the people instead of
looking for something to hunt. Lendal was a master at shape shifting into
animals and such but wasn’t as good at acting like the animal he was at
the time.
Charas began an intricate chant that called forth the powers of true
vision and was startled to discover that the hawk was indeed a young shape
shifter. Charas began another chant and called forth the vines and
branches of the nearby trees to bind the young shifter and bring him
safely to the ground. Lendal was terrified that he was going to die in
this strange land were the plants themselves attacked him but he was
brought to the ground at the hooves of a handsome centaur who introduced
himself as Charas. Charas talked to the young boy informing him that he
would not be harmed here and that he could find safety here if he chose
to. Lendal thought quickly and told the centaur that he would do anything
as long as the trees could not slay him. Charas laughed and bid the trees
to release him. They did and Lendal was free and on his feet but felt
drawn to this creature who had just saved him.
Lendal agreed to stay if Charas would help him to understand who and
what he was. Charas saw within Lendal the gifts of magic that even he had
never known existed but for some reason it was bound from Lendal by a
spell stronger than any Charas had ever seen before. Charas went and spoke
with Serasan the chieftain of the centaur tribe how was also Charas’s
mate. They agreed that this young boy was in need of their help. So the
two centaurs took Lendal into there charge teaching him the ways of the
forest and the laws of the land. Lendal also continued his other skills al
the while thinking that this new life of his may not last, and that he may
have to return to the old ways to survive.
But alas that did not happen for Serasan and Charas not only brought
him in to their homes but into their hearts and the tribe as well. As he
grew up with them they initiated him in the ways of manhood and the ways
of the tribe. They taught him the ways of barter and trade, of how to
survive in any situation, and they showed him the fatherly love he never
had as a child. Lendal grew into a fine young man.
Shortly after Lendals 23rd birthday Charas awoke violently
one night with a vision that rocked him to his marrow. After which he
would not say what the vision was only that Lendal needed to prepare
himself, for his destiny was at hand.
And so Charas instructed Lendal to journey westward towards the
setting sun and that on this journey he would find his destiny. So after
sorrowful goodbyes Lendal set off to find that destiny.
